Sunnybrook Hospital Tests New Patient Safety Alert System

Utilizing data from one or more systems, this application identifies and communicates real-time clinical alerts, helping caregivers quickly detect potential risks to patients so they can intervene, preventing patient harm.

Functionality

Our patient safety solution is a clinical decision support tool that harnesses the power of information already captured in your existing disparate computer systems to detect potential ADE's before they occur, and prevent them by triggering alerts to caregivers. In this way your organization will better utilize and communicate knowledge so that appropriate changes can be made in orders without finger pointing or blame.

  • Alert Triggers: Alerts an be triggered by the hospital’s clinical system if able, OR, New Age can run alert rules against lab results, meds, vitals, nursing assessments, etc. Alerts can be triggered against a single variable, such as a critical lab result, or triggered against multiple variables, such as lab result/med order (i.e. elevated potassium lab result AND order for a potassium elevating med).
  • Alert Communication:
  • Push alerts to text pagers or smart phones;
  • Push alerts via email;
  • Display alerts on PDA device;
  • Display alerts on NEW AGE’s unique patient safety nurse unit view.
  • Utilizes red-yellow-green light indication of alert status.
  • Nursing staff utilize the nurse unit view as a communication board to identify important information about patients in a single glance (i.e. DNR status, restraints, isolation, equipment alerts, etc.).
  • Alert Recipients: Across the hospital, for particular groups of physicians (i.e. blue team), for particular nursing units (i.e. CICU, dialysis), or for individual physicians.
  • For “pushed” alerts, the application supports an escalation hierarchy, so that if the first recipient doesn't respond in a specified period of time, the alert is escalated to a second level, and even a third level if necessary.
  • Alert acknowledgement: Alerts can be acknowledged in the application, ensuring documentation of who saw the alert and when.
  • Reporting: Track alert acknowledgements and time from alert trigger to acknowledgement to alert cleared.
  • When viewing an alert, clinicians can access clinical practice guidelines appropriate to that alert.
  • HL7 data is converted to XML.
  • XML data is parsed into a database.
  • Rules are applied against the data using Microsoft BizTalk.
  • Patient safety alerts are triggered to clinicians.
